Drafting My Statement of Intent
What is a "Statement of Intent"?
It is a statement in a 200-250 words that define who am I as a critical practitioner, declaring my interests, generate my own agenda, my intentions of my graduation project.
How to articulate it?
Look back on the things done in the Clarifying Intent Workshop, the 8 provocations, Venn Diagram and the 4 zones questions, re-read the free writing reminder notes that I keep it with myself, reflect and narrow it down into specific areas that defines my intentions such as what kind of designer that I wanted to be, how my strengths, happiness and enjoyment come into place which narrow down to a range of topic/ideas that I'm interested in, who I wanted to work with, who are my audience, what method that I will use in my project, etc.
Statement of Intent (Draft)
I am a designer that creates a sense of resonance with people in terms of emotions and feelings. I'm good at conceptualizing my findings and experimenting with the process to achieve my objectives. I want to find out the emotions and feelings that drive humans to bring revolutionary changes to the world, sometimes it's just a sudden action to correct things which seem wrong or against one's morals/rules/will – Anger (The good one). To be more specific, I'm interested to find out more about the feeling of irritability or anger because of the inability to achieve something. It can happen in various scenarios such as in the working field, in a relationship, in daily activities, driving, any human interaction or communication related or even with technical issues. I plan to use mixed media and clay sculpture to execute my idea together as a comprehensive piece. I want to work with introverts, good tempers, high EQ or sensitive people because they share the similarities of expressing their inner selves in a unique way. I will investigate what are specific reasons or situations that make them frustrated, what are the things they do to express their anger, how do they feel in the state of anger. I intend to explore any metaphor example, symbolism or case studies that are related to my topic.
Based on the feedback, I'm in the right path while some point needs to be more specific and requires more elaboration. Since my intent is to create a project based on anger/frustration, here are some questions and the answers of it might support my statement of intent:
Why anger are so important since it's one of human emotion?
What anger can cause?
How do we express it in a healthy/unharmed way?
Statement of Intent (Refined)
I am a designer that utilizes human emotions, feelings and desires to create a sense of resonance. My strengths are conceptualizing my findings, and experimenting with the process of combining multiple methods or mediums to achieve my objectives. I’m curious about this particular emotion that drives humans to bring revolutionary changes to the world — Anger, a natural, adaptive response to threats; it inspires powerful, often aggressive, feelings and behaviours, which allow us to fight and defend ourselves when we are attacked. A certain amount of anger, therefore, is necessary for our survival. It can motivate us to enact positive change and has the power to move us away from dangerous or destructive people, places or even systems or beliefs. To be more specific, I would like to elaborate on the feeling of irritability or anger because of the inability to achieve something. It often happens in our daily life, especially in a fast-paced environment. I plan to use mixed media and clay sculpture to execute my idea together as a comprehensive piece. My target audience is introverts and people with good tempers, sensitive or high EQ due to the fact that they all have similarities in expressing their inner selves in a unique way. Hence, I will investigate the specific reasons and situations which make them frustrated, their intrusive thoughts during the state of frustration and the actions they do to express their frustration. I would also explore any metaphor examples, symbolism or case studies to support my findings.
Poster of Intent
Based on my reflection and my statement of intent, design a series of 1-3 posters that will communicate the direction and intention of my final year projects.
It's an activity that visualize the goals the we are setting, we will present the key ideas from the Statement of Intent in the form of poster. Workshops will assist us with the practical and conceptual skills to do this. These points of sharing may reveal others with similar interests and foster potential collaborations or critical discussion.
By the end of the session, it's expected to have an understanding of the collective interests and aspirations of the course and will have used this to make a first draft of my Statement of Intent. I will be prepared to develop my ideas by making for the poster workshop.

Reconstruction: Forming a Series of Poster of Intent

Concept
The series of poster represents the stages of frustration, from calm/neutral to anger/frustration. There are three continuative fluctuation lines across the poster indicates ones expectation, rational and judgement, the fluctuation frequency increases across the stages, it indicates how ones can be disappointed, irrational and misjudgment while being in the state of anger/frustration.
First Poster
In the calm/neutral state, the main subject indicates ones mental state, with the yellow and orange colours combined to form an sunset scenery, it conveys positive feelings such as warmth, happiness, energy, and optimism. The blank space surrounded was full of doodles in light cream colour emphasizing ones neutral mental state.
Second Poster
In the annoyed state, it states that "I start to have ripple within" and "It will cause a tsunami at any time", shows that ones was disturbed by an external factor which triggers a ripple within, and this ripple will become a tsunami if it keeps on going. The background created with tea drips indicates the mental state of ones are starting to be polluted by negative emotions, emphasize with the texture of black brush strokes.
Third Poster
In the climax state, everything are in a mess as it portrays ones in frustration state. Repetitive writings, aggressive drawn lines, smudge textures, swearing words/phrases or sentences and explicit drawings (kinda) are all shown in the poster. The background created from the instant coffee grounds and hot water is to emphasize the negative emotions has fully polluted ones mental state, doing something that are irrational and foolish acts.
Conclusion
As I've created my Poster of Intent, I have clear visions of what I'm going to do for my graduation project, this whole workshop do helps me to sort myself out more easier, like a deep reflection of myself to find out what am I really interested and how can I execute it with my strengths.
