It's Labour Day! No class on Monday but as part of my homework for week, we are required to watch the following videos and respond to the following questions.
In Everything is a Remix Part 1, remixing is looked at as an essential part of how culture is created and evolved. It involves taking existing materials and transforming, combining and copying them to create something new. This has been seen throughout the history of music, from early hip hop samples of funk, jazz and R&B, to later rock bands such as Led Zeppelin who were accused of copying melodies, chord progressions and lyrics. Remixing has allowed individuals to create music, software and ideas without expensive tools, distributors or even skills. It has become a massive part of popular culture and can be seen through memes, social media and Tik Tok.
This video explores the imitation of memes, everything people do, shared to the world and get copied to produce another version of it is meme. The essential part of how memes can get imitates is based on the question— Why do we love copying? Take popular films as an example, they are all about copying, pretty much all of them are new versions of old stuff. For examples, their sequels, remakes and adaptations which includes prequels, reboots and spin-offs where just rebrand of the same as sequels and remakes. Another examples is how genre is defined, they gives familiar stories, characters and situations. Copy and creating is more of the same but different.
This video explores the creative process behind video games, tracing the history of popular titles like DOTA 2, Fortnite, and Tetris. The video discusses how individuals have copied and built upon existing ideas over time, ultimately creating innovative and original titles. It also delves into the three steps of creativity - copy, transform, and combine - and provides examples of how this has shaped the gaming industry over the years.
This video shows the age of AI has arrived and its first flashpoint is art. AI is revolutionizing how we create, view, and experience art, while sparking fear and anxiety in the art world.
However, the questions are:
1. Tell us 3 points you found interesting from watching and understanding the videos. (Something that you may agree or disagree with)
Everything is a Remix - this phrase can describe these categories: (at least who I've could think for now)
a. Biologically - unicellular organism to humans, remix of our parent’s gene
b. Beliefs - culture, religions, races
c. Creativity - music, art, movie
Creativity is indeed the process of copying, translating and combining and the ideas are more the same but different
AI will never be able to reach human intelligence in terms of senses, feelings and emotions
2. Tell us 2 questions that sparked from watching and understanding these videos?
Is there a thoroughly original work?
Can memes be considered art?
3. Tell us 1 takeaway/lesson from watching and understanding these videos.
Creativity is a remix of existing works adding our own ideas/interpretations to create something that we claim that it’s ours. We usually make use of references from others’ work to amplify the message that we try to portray from our work. Copying others' work is just an exploration of ourselves such as finding out which art styles we like, what we are interested in, and learning about the technique and skills. However, the essence of it is to understand how others translate their messages into their artwork and the purpose of the choices they made. (e.g. representation, mediums, forms, materials)
