PHASE 1: DEMENTIA

Why Dementia?

According to WHO, Dementia is currently the seventh leading cause of death among all diseases and one of the major causes of disability and dependency among older people worldwide. Dementia is a term used to describe a group of symptoms affecting memory, thinking and social abilities severely enough to interfere with your daily life, It isn't a specific disease, but several diseases can cause dementia. (CDC, 2019) Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of progressive dementia in older adults, but there are a number of other causes of dementia. Depending on the cause, some dementia symptoms might be reversible.

PHASE 2: SURFACE RESEARCH

Definition

Dementia is a syndrome – usually of a chronic or progressive nature – that leads to deterioration in cognitive function (i.e. the ability to process thought) beyond what might be expected from the usual consequences of biological ageing. It affects memory, thinking, orientation, comprehension, calculation, learning capacity, language, and judgement. Consciousness is not affected. The impairment in cognitive function is commonly accompanied and occasionally preceded, by changes in mood, emotional control, behaviour, or motivation.

Dementia results from a variety of diseases and injuries that primarily or secondarily affect the brain, such as Alzheimer's disease or stroke. Dementia is currently the seventh leading cause of death among all diseases and one of the major causes of disability and dependency among older people worldwide. Dementia has physical, psychological, social and economic impacts, not only for people living with dementia but also for their carers, families and society at large. There is often a lack of awareness and understanding of dementia, resulting in stigmatization and barriers to diagnosis and care. (WHO, 2021)

Explorations & Inspirations

Explore more with the examples of the artists and other art interpretation of dementia. To know more about their philosophy behind the works and how it works to capture the audience attention. The illogical side which helps to bring interest to the audience, which also helps the idea development for Part B as to link these both parts together.

PHASE 4: RESEARCH FRAMEWORK

Purpose of Primary Research

The objectives of the research is to observe the awareness of dementia among my target audience, young adults, raise the awareness by letting them experience the signs and symptoms of dementia in first person perspective, and know about their insights about it.

PHASE 5: DATA COLLECTION

Results

The survey was able to receive a total of 30 respondents, with the majority collected from anonymous respondents online. The results are categorized into three sections: basic information, quantitative research and qualitative research.
